Today's Tips Go Back
Burglary and Theft Prevention
Check List

- Keep doors and windows locked at all times.

- Change the locks if you move into a previously owned home.

- Install heavy-duty locks on your doors. You could use metal or solid core outside the doors with deadbolts and metal striker plates.

- Always look through your peephole or view grill before opening the door to visitors.

- Put supplementary locks on all windows.

- Put secondary locks on the sliding glass doors.

- Never keep your garage open. Keep it closed and locked.

- When you are gone, make sure your house always looks occupied. Cancel the mail or newspapers. Have a neighbor or a friend collect them. Consider installing lights with automatic timers that set of sporadically.

- Don’t keep your keys in a common hiding place (i.e. under the doormat, in the mailbox, or outside).

- Do not leave ladders or tools outside where a burglar can use them to break into your home.

- Engrave your driver’s license number on all valuables.

- Do not give out personal information like your maiden name or social security number on the phone.
